DCL Pays a Visit to First Federal

For two months DCL was on the road converting a quarter of a million signatures for First Federal Savings & Loan. By putting these signatures on-line, tellers can instantly bring up a customer's signature on a computer screen in order to validate it.

Installing the system wasn't enough. Someone had to convert the signatures scrawled on index cards all over New York (First Federal has about 30 branches in the Greater New York area).

The bank found out about DCL from its vendor, SQN Peripherals, who had worked with DCL on a similar project for Chase Manhattan. DCL's job was to scan the images of all these signatures into the new system.

DCL is of course an old hand at conversions of all sorts, but this case presented a new challenge: for security reasons, the original signatures could not leave their branch locations. To tackle this problem, DCL sent out 3 teams of 3 people each to branch after branch with equipment manufactured by DCL's Business Partner, Calera Recognition Systems, until the job got done.

Richard Barth of DCL explains, "We don't give up on our customers' problems and needs. When we get an unusual or complex request, the first thing we do is examine our own resources and figure out what we can achieve with creative solutions and extra effort. First Federal is a good example of what we can accomplish. Other possibilities include bringing in a partner on a project through the Business Partner program or even making a referral. The point is not to hang up on a customer without providing a solution."

It's good to see that someone in this town makes house calls!
