DCL in Aviation & Aerospace

Airliner in flight Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL) is a leading provider of conversion and revision services to the aviation and aerospace industries. Some key services we offer include:

  1. Conversion of legacy tech manuals to your requirements
  2. Looseleaf Revision Service
Conversion of Legacy Tech Manuals

Data Conversion Laboratory is an industry leader in managing and implementing large scale, complex data conversions. We look to be the first choice for organizations serious about mining, extracting and collecting data, and reorganizing and repurposing it for evolving new applications and technologies.

Specializing in XML and SGML, DCL supports all major electronic formats including HTML, FrameMaker, Interleaf, Bookmaster, Folio, Quark, Word, troff, LaTex, Xyvision, Ventura, PDF, WordPerfect…plus paper and microfilm. Much of DCL's experience is with complex technical documentation, typically characterized by elaborate tables, equations, cross-referencing, special characters, footnotes, and complex imaging requirements including hotspots.

Our experience with maintenance manuals include:

  • Conversions that maintain the current complete manual instance.
  • "Bursting" of manuals into smaller revisable units (such as tasks, admonitions, [cautions, warnings, etc.], and boilerplate information), depending on your requirements.
  • Application of AMTOS or JEMTOS codes to your information as metadata or embedded in your data instance.
  • Incorporate Customer Originated Changes (COCs) into baseline material with correct tagging (per the structure of the DTD).

DCL's aerospace clients include:

Arkwin Industries
Atlas Air
B/E Aerospace
Bell Helicopter
Boeing
Bombardier Aerospace
Delta Air
General Electric Aircraft Engines
Goodrich Aerospace
Gulfstream
Honeywell
Lockheed Martin
NAV Canada
Rolls-Royce Aero Engines
Saab
Sikorsky

With these organizations we have converted almost every type of manual found within the industry.

  • AMM (Aircraft Maintenance Manual)
  • AFM (Airport Facilities Manual)
  • Completion Center Handbook
  • CPCM (Corrosion Prevention & Control Manual)
  • Crash, Fire, & Rescue Manual

While our focus is data conversion, we realize that there is more to getting the most out of your information than having it in the right format. That's why DCL can work with you to:

  • Define the best IT infrastucture to meet your business and technical goals
    In-house or outsource content creation
Software tools (Authoring / Management / Distribution)
  • Develop (or modify industry standard) DTDs, EDDs, or templates for your requirements
  • Implement and manage the data migration process

Looseleaf Revision Service
As an operator, your primary competency is the operation of the aircraft in your fleet. While there is a lot to this (more than we could ever imagine!), there are many regulatory issues involved with keeping your manuals up-to-date. DCL is now offering a service to keep your frequently revised manuals up-to-date, removing this burden from flight crews or line maintenance.

The service is perhaps best illustrated by the following flowchart:

This service is most suited for manuals that are frequently revised and do not have a typical static location, such as Alternate Route Manuals, Airway Manuals, or FCOM (Flight Crew Operating Manual).

DCL Revision Insertion service offers the following advantages:

  • Typically lower operating costs
  • No resource issues
  • Revisions delivered on-schedule, even around holidays
  • Complete 24 x 7 tracking of every manual, so that you know when a revision was received at DCL, when it was inserted, and when / where it was sent to.
